What is Positive Behaviour Support?

As defined by the National Quality and Safeguards Commission –

Positive behaviour support helps people with disability live their best life. It assists others to understand why a person acts a certain way and how to better support the person to meet their needs.

Positive behaviour support strategies are documented in a behaviour support plan. Behaviour support plans sometimes also include restrictive practices.

Regional Behaviour Support expands on that; Positive Behaviour Support is-

⁃ getting to know the person and what is most important to them

⁃ gathering the pieces of the puzzle (the reasons why a person might do what they do in certain circumstances) and assisting their support network to put the puzzle together and meet the persons unmet need

⁃ to work in collaboration with other professionals to enhance quality of life for the person overall

⁃ to work with providers that are implementing restrictive practices and assist them to report, collect data and in fading them out in a realistic way

⁃ choice and control reside with the individuals we support and we recognise that people evolve as a result of their experiences- Paula, Practitioner and Director

⁃ every person deserves to be authentically understood, not just managed, and this belief underpins all aspects of my work- Danielle, Practitioner

⁃ recognising each participant’s strengths, potential, and right to a fresh start- Nadia, Practitioner

⁃ to genuinely believe, empower and nurture.

Empowering People

At Regional Behaviour Support, Our goal is to support people to live a life that is meaningful. We see the person first and listen to what they are trying to tell us, even when they are not saying anything at all.

Promoting Wellbeing and Quality of Life

We look at everyday experiences and the impact of those experiences on quality of life in all domains. Freedom, respect and dignity underpin our work.

Building On Strengths and Capacity

Building skills and capacity takes time, effort, patience and consistency. No matter how big the goal is, it starts with the first step.

Working with the Person and Their Support Network

Strong support systems create stronger outcomes. With the person at the centre, we work collaboratively with families, carers, support workers, support coordinators, therapists, and other stakeholders to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to support. By building trusted partnerships, we can better support each participant’s journey towards a better quality of life.
